Aging is a privilege not everyone gets to experience. That\u2019s what I always told myself when my hair started turning gray. At first, it was hard. And I battled with my insecurities, but as time went on and people began complimenting my salt-and-pepper hair, I grew to love it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Little did I know, my husband had other thoughts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our 30th wedding anniversary was around the corner, and I wanted to make it special because it was such a big milestone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I got Deon a nice watch and reserved a table at our favorite restaurant. As I was getting ready for the evening, he watched me closely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s that look for?\u201d I asked, raising an eyebrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh, a surprise? I can\u2019t wait!\u201d I replied, feeling a mix of excitement and curiosity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the past, Deon had given me wonderful gifts, so I could only assume that he would try and outdo himself for our anniversary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I could have laughed at how wrong I was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We arrived at the restaurant, and everything was perfect. The soft jazz, the candles and red roses in the middle of the table, it was all just the perfect setting for an important evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLet\u2019s order first,\u201d my husband said, smiling over the menu. \u201cI\u2019ll do the steak, as usual. And you? The salmon?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I nodded. We had gotten so comfortable with each other. Every action seemed effortless but, at the same time, felt like a well-rehearsed routine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHere you go,\u201d Deon said, handing me a little gift bag. \u201cI thought you\u2019d like it. And appreciate it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There it was: a box of jet-black hair dye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My stomach churned fiercely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s this?\u201d I asked, trying to keep calm and my voice steady.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s hair dye, Eve,\u201d he said, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. \u201cI thought you\u2019d like it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHair dye?\u201d I echoed. \u201cBecause I have gray hair?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I forced a smile, not wanting to ruin the evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThank you,\u201d I said quietly, placing the box back in the gift bag and letting it hang from the chair handle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat about my gift?\u201d Deon asked excitedly, not taking note of how his actions had devastated me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reluctantly, I pushed the watch box across the table. He snatched it up in an instant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh, Eve!\u201d he exclaimed. \u201cThis is wonderful! My old one had done its time anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m glad you like it,\u201d I said curtly, not wanting to tell him that the underbelly of the watch had a message inscribed on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next few days, I couldn\u2019t stop thinking about it. I couldn\u2019t understand why my gray hair really bothered him. Especially because he had gray hair already. We were well into our sixties, and nobody expected us to look young.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unless maybe that\u2019s exactly what he wanted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo, you think that trying to look younger is going to make Deon regret the hair dye?\u201d my best friend Susan asked me when we met for tea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYes,\u201d I replied. \u201cIf he\u2019s ashamed of me now, just you wait.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh, Eve,\u201d Susan laughed loudly. \u201cI cannot wait to see what you do next.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next day, I dyed my hair jet black. It felt strange, seeing my reflection with such dark hair after so long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it did remind me of my younger days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I went shopping, taking Susan along with me. I bought clothes that made me look like I was trying to recapture my youth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEve,\u201d Susan said when we were in a clothing store. \u201cThis is extreme, even for you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tight jeans, trendy tops, the works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the end of the day, I started to look like I was trying to be 20 again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo, now what?\u201d Susan asked me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNow, I\u2019m going to wear my new clothes to Deon\u2019s office tomorrow. I\u2019ll take him some lunch and he can see the person that he\u2019s trying to recreate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next morning, my husband went to work as usual, seeing me in my newly dyed black hair but with the same old clothes that I always wore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The surprise was going to come later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I made Deon some pasta salad and put it away, ready to take it when I was ready to leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My husband looked me up and down and then over my shoulder, probably to see if any of his colleagues were watching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDo you like it?\u201d I twirled around. \u201cI thought you wanted me to look younger.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I left Deon\u2019s office without a word and went home. I knew that I had embarrassed him, and that had been my intention all along.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That evening, my husband came home looking defeated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCan we talk, Eve?\u201d he asked, his voice softer as he came into our bedroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOf course,\u201d I said, sitting upright.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But still, instead of making me feel better, my husband\u2019s apology made me doubt myself even further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One afternoon, while having coffee with Susan, I let her into my thoughts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI just don\u2019t get it,\u201d I said. \u201cFirst, he wanted me to change, and then I did. And then Deon tells me that he just wants me to be happy? Then why don\u2019t I feel happy?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Susan reached across the table and squeezed my hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMen can be so clueless sometimes. He probably thought that he was doing something nice,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOr maybe he\u2019s having a mid-life crisis,\u201d I said. \u201cI don\u2019t understand Deon sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We went back and forth, talking about Deon and how one unconscious action had led me to think that what made me comfortable in my own skin, just wasn\u2019t good enough for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the weeks went by, I found myself thinking more and more about our anniversary and the message behind the gift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One evening, as we were sitting down for dinner, I decided that it was time for another conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCan we talk about something?\u201d I asked, setting my fork down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSure,\u201d he said, looking up from the chicken on his plate. \u201cWhat\u2019s on your mind, love?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been thinking a lot about our anniversary,\u201d I began. \u201cAnd the gift you gave me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt felt like you were telling me that I wasn\u2019t good enough, and that has really messed with my self-esteem. I am good enough. My hair is nothing to be ashamed of.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI never meant it that way,\u201d he said, regret dripping from his voice. \u201cI do accept you as you are.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThen you need to understand that our gray hairs are a reminder of the fact that we\u2019re getting older. But the joy is that we\u2019re getting older together,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deon stood up to hug me after that. And as we embraced, I felt a sense of peace wash over me. We wouldn\u2019t stop the passage of time, irrespective of how much we wanted to. But we could face it together, with love and acceptance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
