But Jerry, known for his penny-pinching ways, makes the invitation sound like a rare gesture of generosity. Instead, he hands the bill over to Leo, claiming that he lost his wallet. When the couple realizes the truth, they teach him a lesson.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last weekend, my father-in-law, Jerry, invited my husband, Leo, and me to a fancy restaurant for dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is nice,\u201d I told my husband. \u201cWe don\u2019t do things like this very often. I think we should dress up and truly make a night of it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI agree, honey,\u201d Leo said. \u201cLet\u2019s just have a good time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The restaurant was exquisite, with soft lighting and a gentle hum of live jazz music in the background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYes, I\u2019ve made partner, too!\u201d I said excitedly. \u201cBut the official announcement will only come in the new year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leo went on to talk about work and how he was looking for us to buy a house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We ordered our meals, and Jerry toldl us about how he really wanted a trip to Hawaii.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI just think that I need a change of scenery,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd all that sunshine should be good for me. It\u2019s been lonely without your mother around to be adventurous with.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I smiled at him sadly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since my mother-in-law\u2019s passing almost two years ago, the weight of her absence was still felt very strongly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jerry barely did anything without constant prompting from Leo and me, so his wanting to take us to dinner was a big achievement in terms of his healing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut would you want to go alone?\u201d Leo asked, finishing his meal with a long gulp of whiskey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo,\u201d Jerry said. \u201cMaybe with a tour group or something like that. It would be cheaper than doing it alone. And there should be discounts for seniors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCan I interest you in dessert?\u201d our waiter asked, bringing over three dessert menus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After that, my father-in-law went on about how much he was enjoying playing golf with his new friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We both knew that there was a possibility that we would have to pay for the dinner, but we didn\u2019t mind. Jerry was known for his penny-pinching ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He took the bill and reached into his pocket for his wallet, but in doing so, his cheerful demeanor shifted dramatically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He started patting his pockets, his expression growing increasingly distressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s no big deal, Dad,\u201d Leo reassured him. \u201cWe\u2019ve got this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But then, something caught my eye the next morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My stomach churned with a mix of disbelief and amusement. It was a classic Jerry move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I went to my husband, who was making toasted sandwiches and showed him the photo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We sat down to eat our toasted sandwiches in silence, both thinking about whether we should bring it up with Jerry or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDoesn\u2019t that just mean small portions of food and ridiculous prices?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the restaurant, we got into our comfortable routine of catching up on the week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I chuckled at Jerry. Despite how adventurous he tried to be when it came to food, he knew what he enjoyed and stuck to that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dinner flew by with us just chatting about everything and nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And when the waiter brought the check, it was our turn to put on our best performances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leo patted his pocket with exaggerated concern, a frown forming on his face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh, darling,\u201d he said. \u201cI must have left my wallet at home! Carmen, please tell me that you have yours; I know you changed your bag.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I feigned panic as I rummaged through my purse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDarn it,\u201d I said. \u201cI don\u2019t have mine here either; I just assumed that you would have yours, so I didn\u2019t double-check before we left home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDad, do you think you could cover this? We\u2019ll pay you back, of course,\u201d Leo said solemnly. \u201cI\u2019m sorry, Dad. Sometimes Carmen and I rush around too much, and we forget things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jerry looked stunned, his eyes darting between us and the bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUh, well, yeah. I suppose I could,\u201d he muttered, reaching reluctantly for his wallet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The waiter, who Leo had briefed about our plan, stepped in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry, sir,\u201d the waiter said to Leo. \u201cBut we have a strict policy here. If the bill isn\u2019t paid, we just call the police.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jerry\u2019s face turned pale as he pulled the bill closer to him. He fumbled with his wallet, finally pulling out his credit card with trembling hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat you did last weekend wasn\u2019t good, Jerry. Of course we were going to take over the bill. But it was the way you lied about it. I saw your wallet sticking out of your pocket when I looked at the photos the next morning. You had it and you lied,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d Jerry said, taking his bowl from me. \u201cI shouldn\u2019t have tried to avoid paying. And I promise it won\u2019t happen again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
