In our home, I\u2019m the one who makes more money. It hadn\u2019t been an issue before, but recently, my husband Tom has been pressuring me to take a second job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t even leave the house to work, so you cannot possibly be as tired as I am at the end of the day,\u201d Tom said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut you\u2019re a mechanic, Tom,\u201d I retaliated. \u201cYou run your own business. And you take three days off just because you have people to do the job.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLet\u2019s just table this conversation,\u201d he said dismissively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And for a few weeks, we did table the conversation. I hoped that he wouldn\u2019t bring it up again because I couldn\u2019t understand why it was even a conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAre you struggling financially, Lisa?\u201d my mother asked me when I told her about Tom\u2019s suggestion over a mother-daughter pasta date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo, not at all,\u201d I replied. \u201cLook, we\u2019re not difficult people, we\u2019re not fancy, so our lives are easy to manage and sustain. It\u2019s the fact that Tom was really pushing for this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDo you think his business isn\u2019t doing well?\u201d she asked, sipping on her drink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat can\u2019t be it,\u201d I replied. \u201cI\u2019ve seen the number of cars that come in and out on a weekly basis. It\u2019s enough to turn a profit. And he\u2019s been employing new staff constantly. That\u2019s also a good thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThen what is it?\u201d my mother asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have no idea,\u201d I said, adding more grated parmesan onto my pasta. \u201cBut I do know that I don\u2019t have the time for a second job. I cook and clean in between sitting at my laptop. I do groceries during my lunch breaks, and I take the dogs to the vet or whatever during those times, too. I just can\u2019t see it working out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou have to tell him, darling,\u201d my mother said. \u201cYou have to make it known that you cannot take on an added responsibility that\u2019s going to leave your cup empty.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everything was fine until we decided that it would be better to sell my car and buy a new one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI told you, Lisa,\u201d Tom said over dinner one night. \u201cYou need to get that second job.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He cut into his steak, his knife grating against the fork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy me?\u201d I asked, incredulous. \u201cI already work long hours, and my job is exhausting. I have to look at a screen the entire day and pay attention. By the end of the day, my eyes are sore and my brain is exhausted. And then I have to worry about dinner and laundry and everything else.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYour job is easy, Lisa,\u201d he replied. \u201cYou\u2019re trying to make it seem worse than it is. You work from home, remember? You don\u2019t have to leave this house. And you don\u2019t get as tired as I do because you\u2019re not getting beneath cars every single day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was stunned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy don\u2019t you get another job? You can do it on the days you have off!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBecause, then, Lisa,\u201d he said slowly, as if speaking to a child, \u201cI\u2019d miss bowling with my friends!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said it as if it was the most logical reason in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seriously? It was the stupidest reason in the world to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFine,\u201d I said. \u201cI\u2019ll look around.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My husband looked as though Christmas had come early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGood,\u201d he said. \u201cThat settles it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I watched as he picked up his plate and left it on the kitchen counter, not even trying to empty the rest of the food into the garbage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If he wanted me to find a second job, I would. But I knew that he would hate what I had in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next day, as Tom left for work, he popped his head into my home office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDon\u2019t forget to start looking for a job,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd try harder with my work overalls, Lisa. There are some grease stains that refuse to come out. It\u2019s embarrassing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With that, he walked out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, I went onto the bowling alley website. It was the place that Tom and his friends played at. I had always wondered why they frequented the little place because it was dark and unwelcoming to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh, come on, Lisa,\u201d Jill said. \u201cWe both know that Tom and Marcus go for the waitresses in the short dresses.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marcus was Tom\u2019s best friend, and Jill was his wife. Once, we had all been invited to the bowling alley for the venue\u2019s anniversary, and after Jill and I saw the place, we never went back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My plan was simple: get a job at the bowling alley for the night shifts and make my husband jealous enough to regret his suggestion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On my first day at the bowling alley, a Wednesday, which was the weekly bowling night for Tom and his friends, I asked him if he was going bowling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAre you going to the bowling alley tonight? Do you want to have dinner at home before you go?\u201d I asked casually, as I made some breakfast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYeah, probably,\u201d he said, not looking up from his phone. \u201cMake some fish and chips or something like that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFine,\u201d I said with a smile. \u201cSee you there!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His eyes finally met mine, confusion flickering across his face, but he shrugged it off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh, you have no idea what you\u2019re in for,\u201d I said to myself as he walked out the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That evening, I arrived at the bowling alley in my new uniform: a tight, short dress that left little to the imagination. I couldn\u2019t imagine that my husband would be fine with me wearing such a thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry about the uniform,\u201d Ursula, the manager, said. \u201cI\u2019ve tried to make changes and even add stockings or leggings to it, but the owner is adamant that it stay like this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s just a sick thought,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I tended the drink stall, occasionally leaning over to fry the miniature donuts that were quite popular among the teenagers bowling away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I saw Tom arrive alone and start playing by himself. As the first hour went by and the teenagers began to leave to meet their curfews, the men began to get rowdy. As expected, the men began to hit on me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, my husband spotted me, his eyes darkening as he watched the attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat the hell, Lisa?\u201d Tom stormed over, eyes blazing. \u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m working, Tom,\u201d I said with a smirk. \u201cYou wanted me to get a second job, remember?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis isn\u2019t what I meant!\u201d he yelled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell, I\u2019m getting great tips,\u201d I retorted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My husband\u2019s jaw clenched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cQuit. Now,\u201d he barked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe need the money,\u201d I said, walking away to serve another table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tom went back to bowling, not wanting to cause a bigger scene. But I knew that the moment my shift was over, he would be back on the topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He kept glancing at me every few minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About halfway through my shift, Ursula approached me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ursula sighed a deep sigh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat man has seduced almost all the waitresses here. One even had his child two weeks ago. I heard that she\u2019s after him for child support now. Apparently she did a paternity test to prove it and all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I knew that Ursula had no idea that I was married to Tom, so there wasn\u2019t a need to lie or mask the truth. What she had just told me was a version of Tom that I didn\u2019t know existed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, that\u2019s why he wanted me to get a second job. He wanted me to pay for his child support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I marched over to Tom, ignoring the eyes of the other patrons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou\u2019re a disgusting human!\u201d I screamed, slapping him hard across the face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don\u2019t care,\u201d I said. \u201cI don\u2019t want to hear it. You will pack your things and get out tonight. Tomorrow, I will file for divorce.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
