Rosal\u00eda didn’t seem scared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She seemed prepared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Juanito, on the other hand, felt his stomach clench like wet leather in the sun. Never in his life had he faced anything more dangerous than a grumpy bull.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Who is it?” he asked in a voice that tried to sound firm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From outside they responded:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014You know you can’t hide forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rosal\u00eda walked towards the door, but did not open it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I’m not coming back,” he said clearly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Juanito looked at Rosal\u00eda, searching for an explanation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Before coming here… I worked in a traveling show,” she said without taking her eyes off the door. “They exhibited me because of my size. They called me a freak. They made me carry men as if it were part of the show.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Juanito clenched his fists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014They paid me very little. They controlled everything about me. Even what I ate. Even who I talked to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“And them…?” he asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The wood creaked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Juanito looked around for something he could use as a weapon. He only found an old shotgun hanging above the fireplace. He wasn’t sure if it worked, but he took it down anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I don’t want any trouble,” he murmured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rosal\u00eda looked at him for the first time with a mixture of surprise and respect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The words hit him harder than the fists on the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before he could answer, the door gave way with a crash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three men entered. Dusty. Wearing dark hats and with hard looks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The adventure is over,” said the tallest one. “The public pays to see it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Juanito felt his legs tremble. But something inside him, something he had never used before, ignited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“She doesn’t belong to anyone,” he said, raising the shotgun even though his hands were sweating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The men laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Until Rosal\u00eda stepped forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stood in front of Juanito.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I don’t need you to defend me as if I were fragile,” she whispered. “I just need you to be by my side.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then he looked at the men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014I’m not coming back. Not for money. Not for threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The taller one advanced, trying to grab her arm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rosal\u00eda pushed him away with a single movement. The man fell against the table, knocking over plates and chairs. The other two hesitated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Juanito took the opportunity to shoot at the ceiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The loud noise caused dust to fall like rain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Get off my property!” he shouted, surprising himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The men exchanged glances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They had not come prepared for resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Much less so for a woman who wasn’t trembling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They withdrew with threats that the wind eventually carried away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the dust settled again, the ranch was quiet once more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Juanito lowered the shotgun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His hands were still trembling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I’m not brave,” he admitted. “I was afraid.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rosal\u00eda smiled gently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014Courage is not about not being afraid. It’s about staying even when you’re afraid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They sat down in front of the stove again. The broken door let in the cold air, but neither of them moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“So\u2026” said Juanito, swallowing hard. “If you stay\u2026 it won’t be because I bought you. It will be because you want to.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rosal\u00eda watched him for a long time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014That’s what I needed to know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ranch wasn’t big. It wasn’t luxurious. It held no promise of wealth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But he had something she had never had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Juanito stopped feeling less of a man for not knowing everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She learned that love is not about demonstrating experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But to offer respect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That night, when the wind blew again over R\u00edo Seco, it no longer sounded like loneliness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It sounded like home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Juanito understood something that no marriage announcement could have taught him:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
