I Came Home to Find My MIL Wearing My Dress, but Her Discovery in My Wardrobe Turned Our Worlds Upside Down<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Gianna walks into her home one afternoon, she finds her mother-in-law trying on her favorite dress. She demands that the woman change her clothing, but Kathy has other plans. She shows Gianna a note that makes it seem like Gianna has been having an affair only for the tables to turn.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the past three years of my married life, I thought I had the perfect marriage. Henry and I were happy, or so I believed. We lived according to our own schedule, working from home or in shared spaces whenever we saw fit. We just wanted to be together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe honeymoon phase will end soon, Gianna,\u201d my mother told me. \u201cAnd that\u2019s okay. It just means that you\u2019ll have to start working a little harder when it comes to your marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I didn\u2019t expect my mother to speak it into existence. But shortly after that conversation over mimosas, things in my life began to change drastically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recently, my mother-in-law, Kathy, moved closer to us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe needs to downsize, Gianna,\u201d Henry told me as we sat down for lunch one weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo, I\u2019ve been looking for apartments for her and Joey, her cat,\u201d Henry said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first, I\u2019ll freely admit it, I loved having Kathy close to us. Especially because once we were all instructed to get back to the office full-time, it was always comforting to get home and find a hot meal waiting for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m right here, Gianna,\u201d she said one day when I walked into my house to Kathy cooking a stew. \u201cI\u2019ll be making sure that you and Henry are eating properly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I appreciated it. I appreciated the time that Kathy took to look after us. But after a while, things began to get too much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s like your mother lives here,\u201d I said to Henry one day after I was so sure she had been snooping in my bedroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first, I didn\u2019t notice the changes, but then one day I was looking for a pair of earrings and found that the things on my vanity were rearranged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I didn\u2019t want to fuss about it because I also knew that I was scatterbrained, and I did change things around absentmindedly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But then, it started happening more often. And the items being rearranged were my intimates and other clothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the more I paid attention to my things being mysteriously rearranged, the more it coincided with Kathy\u2019s visits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHenry, did you or your mom re-set my cupboards?\u201d I asked him one day as I did the dishes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I didn\u2019t want to confront him, I just wanted to know what was going on in my home when I wasn\u2019t around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I didn\u2019t want to fight with my husband.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat? You\u2019re being ridiculous, Gianna! Why would we just go through your stuff? And why would my mother do that anyway? Why would she care what\u2019s in your cupboards?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Henry\u2019s face clouded with anger as he took a beer out of the fridge and set it on the counter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou can\u2019t go around saying things like that, Gianna. It will hurt my mother.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With that, he turned and went into the living room to watch TV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, of course, things only got worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One day, I decided to surprise Henry by coming home early from work. I just wanted to spend time with him and finally cook a good meal in my home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But instead of the usual warm welcome that I got from my husband, I found him panicked and trying to block my entrance to our bedroom while frantically texting someone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I tried to push past him, determined to uncover whatever he was hiding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHenry, what\u2019s going on?\u201d I demanded, my voice trembling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He looked anxious like he had been up to no good and was about to get caught.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGianna, you shouldn\u2019t be here right now,\u201d he said, his eyes darting around nervously. \u201cJust go back to work. Please. Give me some space to work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was astounded that he could speak to me like that. In my own home, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ignoring him, I swung open the bedroom door and froze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There stood my mother-in-law, clad in one of my favorite dresses. The sight of her in my dress looked so wrong. And more than that, it was an invasion of my personal space that I couldn\u2019t comprehend at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without thinking, I snapped a photo of her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy are you wearing my dress, Kathy?\u201d I demanded, my voice rising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My mother-in-law\u2019s eyes narrowed as she smirked at me. With her hands on her hips, she turned around and looked at herself in the mirror one more time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cStop it, darling,\u201d she said nonchalantly. \u201cDelete that photo, or I\u2019ll tell Henry about what I found in your pocket.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d I asked, confused. I had nothing to hide. Absolutely nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She pulled out a crumpled grocery store receipt from beneath the pile of clothes on the bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBabe! Happy anniversary! Thank you for last night!\u201d Kathy read out. \u201cLots of exclamation marks, too, Gianna. It must have been a good anniversary.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I couldn\u2019t understand what she was saying. I hadn\u2019t written that note, and neither had Henry. Or, he hadn\u2019t written it to me, at least. I picked up a pair of pants that had fallen from the pile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPlease, take off my dress,\u201d I said slowly. \u201cOr I will share this photo on the family group chat and show everyone how you\u2019ve been snooping.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kathy narrowed her eyes at me and nodded. She held the note out to me, ready for me to take it. I didn\u2019t want to retaliate and tell her anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I went downstairs to the kitchen; Henry had disappeared. For all I knew, he was probably hiding in the bathroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Kathy didn\u2019t know was that the note wasn\u2019t mine, which meant that the only other clothing she could have taken it from was Henry\u2019s. Realization hit me like a freight train.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, Henry was cheating on me. Our honeymoon phase had ended when his mother moved closer, but he hadn\u2019t tried to be intimate with me for a while.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two days later, I bought a GPS tracker and hid it in Henry\u2019s car, right beneath his seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I downloaded the app onto my phone and waited for him to go somewhere unusual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I didn\u2019t have to wait very long because a few days later, the tracker led me to a suburban grocery store. It was the same place that had issued the receipt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After standing in the parking lot for a while, I finally mustered the courage to go inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With my head pounding, a headache that had appeared out of nowhere, I found myself walking through the aisles trying to find my husband.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And there he was, in the cereal aisle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With another woman and two young children who, to anyone else, looked like a happy family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My vision blurred immediately, the tears filling before I could even try to comprehend what I was seeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHenry?\u201d I asked, my voice betraying me and breaking. \u201cWho are these people?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My husband\u2019s face went white before my eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDaddy?\u201d the little girl asked. \u201cWho is this woman?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe\u2019s my sister, darling,\u201d he said, taking her hand and swinging it gently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, he pulled me aside, pleading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGianna, please, let\u2019s talk privately. This isn\u2019t what it looks like.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was exactly what it looked like. I saw the way the woman and their children looked at Henry. This wasn\u2019t new. This wasn\u2019t a random relationship or hookup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNot what it looks like? Henry, you have a whole other family! How long have you been lying to me?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He hung his head, unable to meet my eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGianna, I can explain. It\u2019s complicated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDaddy, Mom is taking us to get slushies,\u201d the little boy said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cComplicated? You married me. And now you have an entirely new family. What\u2019s complicated about that?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Henry looked me up and down, as though he was trying to unravel his thoughts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ll talk to you at home,\u201d he said simply and walked away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I left the grocery store and drove right home, forgetting that I had to get back to the office and continue with my day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hours later, as I was sitting on the couch drinking my third glass of wine, Henry walked in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou want to know the truth?\u201d he asked, sitting down across from me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGo for it,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had spent hours trying to figure it out, and I didn\u2019t have the energy to fight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI married you because my mother wanted me to marry someone from a wealthy family. That was it. I married you for your money. Why do you think my mother was trying on your dresses? Because they\u2019re expensive. They\u2019re lavish.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fury and betrayal coursed through me. The pain was unbearable. I felt the ground shift beneath me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want a divorce,\u201d I said. \u201cGo to your family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Henry\u2019s face contorted with desperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGianna, wait! We can work this out!\u201d he pleaded. \u201cI need this. I need you! I\u2019m not working now. We\u2019ve been running the house off your money. I can\u2019t afford this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cToo bad,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I filed for divorce the next day. Thankfully, my father had added an infidelity clause in our prenuptial agreement, resulting in Henry getting absolutely nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even the house was mine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But if anything, I was finally relieved to be free from the deceitful Henry and his intrusive mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enough was enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My final offer to the family was sending the photo of Kathy to the family group. They needed to know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
