He hurried forward to greet him, already imagining contracts, favors, and connections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGood evening, Mr. Secretary!\u201d he said, extending his hand with an exaggerated smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the Secretary walked right past him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He did not even look at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His eyes were searching for someone else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He walked straight toward\u2026 the table in the back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The drivers\u2019 table.
The table where Leo was sitting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The entire ballroom fell silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Secretary stopped in front of Leo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leo calmly stood up and straightened his back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And before hundreds of stunned guests, the Secretary of Defense raised his hand and gave a perfect military salute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSir,\u201d he said firmly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The air froze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGood evening, Admiral,\u201d he continued. \u201cThe President sends his congratulations for the success of the mission in the Gulf of California. We did not know you were in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don Arnulfo\u2019s face drained of color.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Admiral?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leo\u2026 the useless son\u2026 the one who \u201cachieved nothing\u201d\u2026?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt ease, Secretary,\u201d Leo replied with calm authority. \u201cThis is a private visit. My brother\u2019s wedding.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOf course, sir,\u201d Valdez nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then he turned to Don Arnulfo, who could barely remain standing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDon Arnulfo,\u201d the Secretary said, \u201cdidn\u2019t you know?
Your son, Vice Admiral Leo Mondrag\u00f3n, is one of the most important naval commanders in the country. He led the force that protected our territorial waters. He is respected by the Pentagon and by the United Nations. He is one of the finest strategists Mexico has.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don Arnulfo\u2019s legs trembled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The son he had thrown out of the house.
The son he had humiliated in front of everyone.
The son he seated with the drivers\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Was admired by generals and by the President.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He approached Leo, his voice breaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leo looked at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was no resentment in his eyes.
